Litter boxes are a necessity if you are
raising a cat. Since cats have one of the smelliest poops, it is absolutely
important for a cat owner to have a litter box to prevent the smell from
sticking into your room. However, litter boxes can be quite expensive.
Nowadays, people have been starting to DIY their own litter boxes.
One of the advantages of making your own
litter box is you can customize it any way you want and you can make one that
will suit the needs of your cat and household. Here are a few steps on how to
get started on your own litter box, from litter-boxes.com:
Gather Supplies and Tools
The tools you will need for this project are a plastic storage bin, a storage bin lid (optional), a utility knife, sandpaper, measuring tape or ruler, and a marker.
In selecting a storage
box, you will need one that holds at least 18 gallons (66 liters) of contents.
If you have a large cat or multiple ones, you might want to opt for a larger
bin.
Measure and Draw Hole
The hole will allow your
cat to enter and exit the litter box, so it is important to make a hole that is
large enough for your cat to fit in comfortably.
For an average-sized cat,
the hole should be 9×9 inches (23×23 cm). A larger cat would need a larger
hole. Use a measuring tape or ruler to create the correct size.
As long as your cat is a
healthy young adult, you can place the hole in the side of the box, about 6
inches (15 cm) from the ground.
Cut the Opening
In this part, you can use
the utility knife to carefully cut along the lines. If the storage bin is made
out of thick plastic, you might have to use a drill and a hacksaw or jigsaw.
Clean Up the Opening
You do not want your cat
getting hurt, so make sure to smoothen any sharp edges using the sandpaper.
Decorate It
Here is the fun part! Make
your creativity run wild and decorate your new litter box.
